  1. Expectations exceeded. Checks all boxes. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 6th Feb 2017

First time purchasing a Medir DHG knife but have purchased this "DHG Rigotti style" knife many times over the years from several different retailers.

I was able to get this sharp right away using the techniques laid out in the Landwell book (I'd also recommend purchasing the book if you haven't.)

I typically end up pairing this type of knife with a Landwell or herder knife (something with a thinner leading edge as to create a longer thinner burr, a "tip knife.") I do this in anticipation of finishing the majority of the reed with this style knife, and then switching to the Landwell or herder for the "fancy tip work" in order to save on the lifespan of the more expensive knife.

I found I was able to work on the entire reed with this Medir knife and felt very comfortable with the tip work. It definitely performs as well as a recently sharpened Landwell in that area. I'm not sure if this will remain a possibility several regrinds down the road but with this price point, there's not a whole lot of downside.

It sharpened easily and evenly throughout the entire length of the blade which hopefully means I will get some mileage out of this knife. There also seems to be a slightly bigger blade than I am used to when compared to the traditional DHG Rigotti style knives, regardless of which manufacturer's I had purchased. I realize this is subject to variance but I am very pleased with this purchase!

  2. AMAZING Knife 5 Star Review

This blade holds it's own- stays sharp, scrapes consistently, and makes reeds purr. Definitely a keeper!

  3. Best Knife I Own 5 Star Review

Posted by on 29th Jul 2015

This knife is fantastic. I was not expecting such good steel for the price. The steel is very nice quality and maintains a sharp edge for a good length of time. The overall weight of the knife feels good. I can easily just use the weight of the knife to do detailed work on the tips of oboe reeds and not feel like I need to put any additional pressure. It has enough weight to do rough scraping as well. Definitely purchasing more of these to have one for rough scraping and one for detail work as it does it all great. The handle is also very comfortable in the hand. Overall a great knife and the price for the quality cannot be beat.
